I did research on the dynamics of milling in grad school and became very interested in the history of machining in general and milling more specifically. As far as I know, there is no book that gives a comprehensive history of machining. There is also a lot of disagreement on the history based on nationalist thinking. Devising Performance: A Critical History by Deirdre Heddon; Jane Milling and a great selection of related books, art and collectibles available now at The book explains how they operate, how to set up work, and how to safely use these tools. There is extensive material on workholding in the lathe—collets, chucks, mandrels, faceplates and centers. Milling machine tooling is covered in detail.

My background is as an aeronautical engineer and model maker with some exposure to lathe work at school and university.

I bought the book to increase my knowledge of general milling practice as I am making my own 3-axis CNC machine. However, on initial reading, the book has failed to meet my expectations, given the title "A complete course"/5().

The book I refer to is " A Master Guide to End Milling " A Regal-Beloit publication from the early 80's that's a great beginners guide and usefull long time reference. Mine still deserves a place in the tool box and sometimes even see's the light of day.

Often a part will need to be milled from multiple angles. While this can sometimes be handled by 4- or 5-axis milling, on a typical 3-axis machine multiple setups will be required. Each setup costs additional time and money, especially when the volume of parts to be machined isn’t very high.
